Chat with an Advocate
This month, Advocacy WA is hosting Chat with an Advocate, a free community morning tea at Dome Café in Bunbury, where people with disability can sit down with our advocates, a community lawyer, and a Justice of the Peace to ask questions, learn about their options, and get clear, practical advice — over a coffee, on us.
A relaxed space for real conversations
Many people don’t know where to start when it comes to understanding their rights or accessing government supports. Systems like the NDIS, Centrelink, and legal processes can feel overwhelming and full of barriers. That’s where this event comes in — a friendly, accessible space where there are no silly questions and every answer is given in plain language.
Our advocates and lawyer will be available to talk through issues like:
- NDIS and Disability Support Pension applications or appeals
- Parenting orders and family matters
- Enduring Power of Guardianship and Enduring Power of Attorney
- Restraining orders and personal safety
We’ll also have a Justice of the Peace available for people needing help with signing or witnessing important documents.
Why events like this matter
At Advocacy WA, we know that information is one of the most powerful tools a person can have. When people with disability understand their rights, they can make informed decisions, navigate complex systems with confidence, and speak up when something isn’t right.
Unfortunately, access to clear, understandable information isn’t always guaranteed. Many government or legal processes are filled with jargon or assumptions about literacy, communication, or access. This can leave people feeling unsure, disempowered, or excluded from decisions that affect their own lives.
That’s why we’re committed to bringing information to the community — not hidden in offices or behind paperwork, but shared in ways that are welcoming, inclusive, and human.
“You have the right to understand what’s happening in your life and to have a say in it. Knowing your rights helps you speak up with confidence,” says one of Advocacy WA’s team members. “That’s what these sessions are all about — making sure people have access to information and support in a way that makes sense to them.”
Building confidence through connection
Chat with an Advocate isn’t just about sharing information. It’s about creating a space where people feel heard, respected, and supported to ask questions that matter to them. When we connect over a cuppa, we can turn confusion into understanding and uncertainty into action.
We believe every person with disability deserves access to clear, practical information that helps them live the life they choose — with dignity, safety, and independence.
